The story behind the Zeeschat tulip
The mascot of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai is Haibao, which means ‘treasure
of the sea’. Dutch history and culture is intertwined with water and the sea. More than
half of the Holland's territory was actually reclaimed from the sea, and 70% of its GDP
is earned in parts of the country that are under sea level. In a way, the Dutch global
economic achievements, which allowed it to become Europe’s second-largest investor
in China and the 10th largest overall, can thus also be seen as a 'treasure of the sea'.

economic achievements, which allowed it to become Europe’s second-largest investor

Because of this feeling of connection to Haibao and the city of Shanghai, the Dutch
Ministry of Economic Affairs asked well-known Dutch tulip grower Jan Ligthart to select
a unique and exclusive new orange tulip cultivar especially for the World Expo 2010 and
to name it "Zeeschat", which in Dutch means “treasures of the sea”. The colour orange is
the Dutch national colour and the tulip the Dutch national symbol. By naming this new
flower "Zeeschat", the ties between Holland and the Shanghai Municipal People’s
Government are forever symbolized.

About the grower
37 years ago, Jan Ligthart started to grow tulips in the backyard of his father at
the age of 13. He went to agricultural college and in his spare time he worked
on several bulb farms to learn the tricks of the trade. At the age of 17 he started
to breed his own tulips. He was very lucky in finding mutations in several tulip
cultivars, one of the well-known mutations is Washington. Today, he still makes
new tulip varieties by crossbreeding. At this moment about 200 new cultivars from
Jan Ligthart are registered by the Royal General Bulb growers Association (KAVB).
Many famous people have forever linked their name to a tulip created by Jan
Ligthart; like the Dutch crown prince Willem-Alexander, designer Givenchy, the
former First Lady of the US and singer Katie Melua.
